There will be a reception for the artists and curators on Friday December 1, 2023 from 7-10 pm along with a live performance by Julia Claire Wallace.

Austin-based curatorial collective Los Outsiders (Jaime Salvador Castillo, Michael Anthony García, Roberto Jackson Harrington and Hector Hernandez) approach to creative endeavors has always included sharing opportunities and nurturing of fellowship. Los Outsiders’ curated their first exhibition with the idea of celebrating and working with their “art crushes” at the Antigua Aduana in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. Returning to the border for their quinceañera (15th anniversary), Los Outsiders is once again celebrating their art crushes’ work, including their own, in an exhibition hosted at the Laredo Center for the Arts.

Laredo's setting on the border has been depicted as dangerous or a place of friction and conflict. However, as most people living in the border region will point out, that is an external perspective. Laredo and all cities on the US/Mexico border should instead be thought of as a delta. A location where the meeting of two similar but different entities converge in a place of growth and creation. A place where new opportunities exist and adaptations flourish.

[artcrush] Chai'n Brai Laika Daimon is an affirmation, born of the linguistic alteration of Rihanna song lyrics rendered through spanish phonetics. Bending language to the needs of the user is common among multilingual speakers. Language adapts, it is not fixed or static but eternally fluid. This exhibition focuses and highlights this type of fluidity. It is a celebration and a consecration of the border as fertile ground that engenders growth and adaptation. Laredo es un lugar que tiene Chai’n.

The exhibition will be on view through Friday, February 2, 2023.
